Italian
Group of Friends of Nature
The Naturfreunde Internationale was founded in Vienna in 1895.
Its principle aim was to offer its members the opportunity to
travel to different places with similar minded people in order to
encourage understanding and integration between diverse cultures.
This idea has given life to a well-organised structure that
nowadays includes more than 1200 houses and refuges in 20
countries, mostly in central and northern Europe.
The association is recognised by the European Council of UNESCO
to promote sustainable tourism through self-management of its
houses. Gruppo Italiano Amici della Natura (GIAN) is
associated with the Internationale Amici Della Natura (IAN).
The Amici della Natura aim to contribute to the maintenance of
a society where everyone has equal rights and equal opportunities.
Members of the association believe in peace and non-violence, care
of the environment and social justice.
CASA
ARCOBALENO (Rainbow
House) LOZIO
Valle Camonica
(BS)
Lozio Valley is a characteristic side valley of the
Vallecamonica at the entrance of Val Baione. The imposing
dolomite mountain of Concarena dominates the surroundings. At
these wonderful, unspoilt high altitudes nestle ancient villages
between woods, pastures and alpine meadows. This is the
splendid setting that surrounds the Casa Arcobaleno of Lozio. The
house was opened in 1993 and has hosted lone travellers and
families from all over Italy and Europe, including students,
musical groups and non-profit making organisations.
The Casa Arcobaleno includes about 150 members who have decided
to work together with respect to a few common-sense rules and a
sense of responsibility for everyone. The members are
involved in many activities including hiking in the mountains,
exploration of the natural environment and parties. All
activities place a special value on a respect for nature and
creating a sense of community.
IN THE AREA

The Vallecamonica is a stunning alpine valley of exceptional
natural beauty with a rich cultural heritage. The
natural environment offers numerous possibilities for days out
mountain trekking in the charming landscapes. The mountains
of Concarena, Pizzo Badile and Mount Adamello offer levels of
difficulty to suit every ability, from hiking and climbing
expedition to studying the geology, flora and fauna.
The historic legacy of the ancient Camuni is visible in every
part of the valley, especially at the National Park of rock
engravings at Capo di Ponte and the regional reserves of Ceto
Cimbergo and Paspardo and the Luine Park at Darfo Boario
Terme.
Equally important is the artistic heritage: The churches of St.
Siro and St. Salvatore at Capo di Ponte, the stations of the cross
at Cerveno, the frescoes of Girolamo Romanion and the frescos of
Cemmo. There is also the National Archaeological Museum of
the Vallecamonica at Cividate, the castles of Breno and Gorzone,
evidence of the Iron Age economy including forges, furnaces and
mining and numerous Roman remains.

HOW
TO GET THERE

Take the "Statale n. 42" from Darfo Boario Terme and
follow the local road towards Borno then take the turning to Lozio.
After the first few kilometres this winding road unexpectedly
opens onto a plateau where animals graze protected by the
mountains. The Lozio area is composed of four villages,
close to each other but with distinct individual characteristics:
Sucinva, Laveno, Villa and Sommaprada. The Casa Arcobalino
is situated at the junction between Villa and via
adua 5.
