Pietro Ramus
 (BY GIANFRANCA ROSSETTI)

Pietro Ramus (1639-1682), among the most important wood-carvers in the second half of the Camunnian 17th century, is the fifth son of G. Battista Ramus (1613-1665), a wood-carver born in Edolo-Mu. Pietro's work is different from his father's and brothers' works. He creates altar-pieces with monumental architectonic structures, columns decorated with human and mythological figures, symbolic animals and plants. The pulpits, the frontals of the altars, the apses looking like small temples and holding the tabernacle, are rich in sacred biblical scenes, in saints' images or stories and Eucharistic symbols. In this period works to catechise are needed: the believers, by looking at them, fix the scenes and the truths of faith in their memory, and later listen to them during the preaching. Pietro Ramus works alone in Edolo, Pisogne, Cedegolo and Grosotto (here he creates a monumental altar-piece 15 metres high), after co-operating with his father in works where his hand cannot be distinguished. Pietro is also a great master because he helps his pupils to develop their natural gifts. Among them there are Giovanni Battista Zotti, Giovanni Giuseppe Piccini and Andrea Fantoni, who became famous, original and creative artists. The altar-piece in the parish church in Cedegolo (1675-76) is Pietro's last and most meaningful work in Valle Camonica. It takes up all the apse and consists of two superimposed architectonic orders, with four columns, two spiral and two smooth ones, covered with rich decorations of flowers, fruit and birds, saints and virtues. The trabeation supports the kneeling Virgin, on whose head the Father and the Son lay the royal crown; above the Holy Spirit flutters. On the cornice ending with fragments of gable, musician angels sit, while others follow the Coronation feast. St. Stephen and St. Francis stand on the top of the columns, St. Peter and St. Paul are on the side corbels. Architecture, sculpture, carving and painting form a remarkable and fine work.
